Everything you need to know about Cyberpunk 2077
and some things you don't!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wake the f*** up Samurai, we have a city to burn.
This sentence sets the tone of CD Projekt Red’s upcoming new instalment to the Cyberpunk series, Cyberpunk 2077. The game that took years in the making is finally releasing in a couple of months, and we thought we’ll compile all the necessary information you guys need to make an informed choice (Spoiler Alert: If you like a big open futuristic world in a dark, gritty setting, you should totally get it).
OVERVIEW
Why is Cyberpunk 2077?
Set in the fictional futuristic world of Night City, Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, first-person RPG. The game doubles down on CD Projekt Red’s love for drugs, violence, and social politics. Think The Witcher 3, but in first-person and with robots.
Night City is an American Megacity (much like Judge Dredd’s Mega City One), broken up into 6 distinct regions:
Corporate City Center, immigrant-inhabited Watson, luxurious Westbrook, suburban Heywood, gang-infested Pacifica, and industrial Santo Domingo. There is a surrounding area called the Badlands, which players can also explore.
The map is said to be much more vertical than The Witcher 3, with visual effect artist Jose Teixeira saying “Cyberpunk is far bigger than anything else that CD Projekt Red has done before. Far, far bigger.” So remember to use up your remaining leave days when this game releases. You'll need it to fully explore the world.
MAIN CHARACTER - V
You will be playing the game as a mercenary by the name of V. Want us to be more specific about V? We can’t, how V looks and plays is entirely up to you. Face, body, background, clothing etc., everything about V is fully customizable, right down to genitals.
You’ll be given a choice of two different voices, one male, and one female, played by voice actors John Flanagan or Cherami Leigh respectively. But other than that, its a free-for-all on your look.
CLASSES
There are 3 main classes in the game, NetRunner (hacking), Techie (machinery) and Solo (combat). These 3 classes influences your player stats, which are broken up into, Body, Intelligence, Reflexes, Technical, and Cool.
But what if I pick Solo, and along the way realize being a NetRunner might be more interesting? Not to worry, you aren’t Class-Locked. Cyberpunk 2077 allows for you to transition into a hybrid class if you feel the need to beat people up while at the same time hacking them.
PLAYSTYLES
How you approach situations is completely in your hands as well. In a mission you can go in guns blazing, or you can choose a more stealthy approach.
Additionally, every gun has a “set to stun” mode, so you can do a non-lethal run if you feel particularly pacifistic. The game also gives you multiple dialogue options, each choice you make affecting something down the line.
Like The Witcher 3, you will obtain a “Game Over” only if your character dies. If you fail to complete a quest the story will move on all the same. So be prepared to save scum, you know who you are.
RELEASE DATE AND DELAYS
Originally Cyberpunk 2077 was set to release 16 April 2020 (imagine that, you could have been playing it right now), but was first delayed till 17 September. Following that, citing balancing and bug fixing, the game was further delayed till 19 November.
However, knowing CD Projekt Red, a couple of months is more than worth the wait. Their games have a high level of polish, and is one of the remaining companies that do not include micro-transactions in their games, instead opting for solid DLC expansions that includes both free and paid content.
CAMEOS
A lot of the buzz about this game has been around Keanu Reeves making a surprise entrance at E3 2019. He will be playing the character of Johnny Silverhand, widely known from the original 1988 Cyberpunk tabletop game. He exists as a chip in V’s head, and plays a large role throughout the game, having dialogue lines second only to V.
Other notable real-world people showing up in the game are:
- Mike Pondsmith, creator of the original Cyberpunk tabletop game.
- Grimes (Claire Boucher)
- A “Reaver” car, as a homage to Mad Max: Fury Road (Ok this isn’t a person, but it’s still cool)
Elon Musk’s Cybertruck is rumoured to be making an appearance based off a Twitter exchange between Musk himself and the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account.
MULTIPLAYER
At launch, Cyberpunk 2077 will not have multiplayer, however quest designer Patrick Mills said that multiplayer is currently in R&D. The multiplayer is being worked on by Canadian Studio Digital Scapes.
